Fashion DIY project #2 : A flower head band

How to make a flower head band

Level of difficulty: Easy
Things you will need:
  • A long ribbon or material

  • A pair of scissors

  • Needle and thread

Step1
Select the ribbon or material that you wish to turn into a beautiful flower head band. This should preferably be hemmed. I used this ribbon that I found somewhere in my mother’s closet.

Step 2
Fold in one end about an inch from the edge. Turn the ribbon over and fold in the other direction the same length as the first fold. Turn over the ribbon again and fold the same length in the direction that you started with. Continue this process until you can count at least six folds. When you are through folding, ensure that the first raw end and the end that continues into the ribbon face the same side. The result will be something that looks like a fan.

Step3
Now take a threaded needle and pass it through the ‘fan’ as close as possible to the top or bottom edge but midway through the one inch width. Pass it in one direction and then back in the other. This makes it secure but do not make it too tight.

Step 4
Using a pair of scissors, cut along the end where the folding stops. This should separate the fan from the ribbon. You should have two raw edges that face the same direction.

Step 5
Open the fan and join the two raw ends. Stitch along the edge to join them together. This leaves you with a pretty flower. If you made it this far then the hardest part is over.

Step 6
Take the flower you just made and stitch it onto the ribbon that you cut off in step 4. I would advice stitching the flower at some off centre point so that when you tie your ribbon the flower lies somewhere on the side.

Now you can tie that head band, check yourself out in mirror and marvel at your handiwork. Congratulations.
I wore mine to disguise a bad hair day that I was having and it worked like a charm.

BELTED UP. HOT OR NOT??

I have this purple belt that I was playing around with the other day. I ended up tyin it around my wrist and just like that a light bulb went off in my head.. So when I wore this purple top ( that I like to call the purple flower because it looks like one) I thought Id team it up with my purple belt.

Cocktail Rings

Cocktail rings have been around for many decades and more than ever their popularity is in its peak time now. Bet you didn't know that this timeless piece of jewerely was first designed in the American prohibition era.

They were fashion symbols worn to secret "cocktail" parties organised in secret clubs known as "speakeasy". Women wore them on the fourth finger of the right hand. These oversized ring then came to be known as cocktail rings. Now you know.

Some of my favourite picks at the moment..

cocktail rings

Cocktail rings are most popular for formal parties but are fun as well for every day wear.

Tips on rocking cocktail rings:

  • Do wear large studs or pearl earings to compliment the elegance and glamour of your cocktail ring.

  • Do not over accessorize when wearing one. Do not wear other smaller rings (except maybe your wedding ring.)

  • Do ear the ring on your index or middle finger, although this isn't set in stone

  • Do experiment with different rings and clothes and go with whatever makes you feel fun

Do you love them or hate them??

I love them :)

Fashionista Orie Rogo Manduli

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Orie Rogo Manduli?? Head gear!! This lady is well known for her elaborate head wrap; heck these items of clothing are synonymous with her name, manduli. Say you went to your tailor in need of a headdress but found you had trouble explaining to her (or him) exactly what you wanted, simply throwing in the name manduli would clarify all details.

She is one woman filled with life and her prescence is a force to reckon with. Every time I see her on T.v im always jazzed by her flamboyance. Hate if you must but she is who she is and her confidence can not be punctured.

I met this lady once. It was back when I was still in high school. On a certain evening on our way back to school from a funkie (school function). Our school bus took us to Kenchic Street, this had become a tradition after funkies. We were there to buy fries and other fast foods that we craved so much at the time.

Only a few girls were allowed out and the rest stayed in the bus and sent the few with their orders. Of course I was among the few. We walked into one of the numerous joints ( I cant remember which one exactly- I think Sanford) and what we saw was unbelievable.

Orie Rogo manduli, in the flesh glamour and all. Wow! She was a sight to behold, her utter elegance was undeniably on point. What the hell was she doing this side of town??

After the excitement wore off (of course we were excited, we were in high school, this was as exciting as it got.) we headed to the counter and placed our orders. Soon after Orie stood up, she was leaving the café, but was unaware of what awaited her.

No sooner had she set foot outside the café than a hoard of girls rent the air with their screams and shouts hollering at her. It was a scene straight out of a red carpet event.

Knowing Orie, it goes without saying that she was enjoying all the attention. The girls were allowed out for a meet and greet session (some took this very rare opportunity to look for boys.)

It was the third term of the academic year and so cameras were allowed in school. Everyone was eager to take photos with this legendary lady but not before she could touch up her make up. She whipped out a mirror and lipstick and smack! She even gave us a tutorial on how to apply lipstick right down to the smacking of the lips.. Anyway click click cameras flashed away as we posed and posed some more for photos of this memorable day. She then dished out some business cards and bla bla bla we were back in prison, oops school.

And that is the day I will never forget (How many marks do you think I would score if this was a composition?? I’m thinking 38/40 he he..) :) :)

long Gloves...

Its been chilly lately. Frozen finger tips and ice cold knuckles are becoming the norm for most early risers. This is therefore the perfect season to invest in a stylish pair of long gloves. Gloves are worn mostly for functional reasons but keeping you warm is not all they are good for.

The image “http://www.catwalkqueen.tv/trends_gloves.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Gloves can be a good way to brighten up an otherwise dull outfit. They can be used to add a well needed splash of colour to an understated look or simply to finish off a look with a touch of class.

For a stylish twist team your gloves up with a sparkly bracelet or throw on a chuncky bangle on your wrist over the gloves. You can also scrunch them down to add a bit of volume.

Have fun staying fabulous in this chilly weather.

what is your take on gloves??

Beauty has a price!!

multiple piercings Hi precious readers,

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word

piercing? I dont know bout you but for me its pain, agonising,

excruciating pain.. (i just thought of -crucio- the banned curse at

hogwarts, Harry Potter)

Having said that you may think I have no piercings but I do acutally, and one

interesting one which is actually the inspiration behind this post, but

before I tell you my story, check this out..

Conch Piercings.. Ouch!!

Tragus piercings... (bet you didn't know thats wat the're called..)

And now the funny part,

ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you the first wonder of secerts of a good looking girl, the one, the only, put your hands together for Billy, the Rocksturrr Goat!!!!

rockstarrr goat!rockstarrr goat!rockstarrr goat!

Seriously, not even a goat would be spared.. I must say there are some pretty disturbed people in this world. Ha ha ha ha!!

Back to my story. I didn't get any piercings till after high school. Why?

Like I said, the thought of the crucio curse freaked me.

When I finally decided the day had come, and more importantly that I was

tired of always being asked about my virgin ears (pun), my cousin was

more than happy to accompany me to the salon.

The lady at the salon was quite pleasant and she surely did her best to

reassure me that the first pair of piercings didn't hurt. I remember

thnking, yeah right, you only say that because you want my money... (my

100 shillings.. he he)

So I chose the studs I wanted, gold coated cafflon studs round in shape.

She fixed the first one in the gun and dabbed a cotton ball soacked in

disinfectant. At this point my hands were as cold as ice and my palms

were already breaking a sweat.

She lowered the gun, I held my breath. She tilted my head with her free

hand, I cupped my mouth to stifle a scream. She then put the gun in

position with my ear lobe between the stud and stopper, finger on the

trigger. Now even my feet were sweating, I couldn’t stop fidgeting, my

legs were shaking, aching to run from the gun...

fire! Went the shot.

Huh?! That’s it? Sigh.

I must say I was much too prepared for that shot. Needless to say the second one took place with more ease.

Then after she was through, she said that I was among the fussiest clients

she had ever had and pointing to her tragus piercing, she added that

people like me could never get such. For some strange reason that

didn't go down well with me.. What did she mean?

Long story short, barely a week had passed and with a friend in tow, I was

back in the hot seat this time for a more daring operation, I wanted a

tragus piercing. The salon lady had trouble believing me and even more

trouble trying to get me to sit still. I knew I would be facing pain

and I knew pain had an ugly face. This wasn't as exciting as I had

wanted it to be.

After quite a struggle, Fire!! Aw! That almost hurt..

It gets worse,

she missed!!

She only managed to drive the earring through the edge of the tragus,

quite unsightly. I wanted to shoot her, anything to make her pay. She

was killing me..

After a very critical pep talk from my friend, I was back on the hot seat.

The misser (nothing kind to say at this point) removed the earring,

cleaned some blood that had come out and the process started all over

again. I know reading this you are probably wondering why I would

subject myself to such torture but may I remind you that I wasn't about

to back down and prove the misser's theory about people like me right.

No way. A few minutes of struggle passed.

Fire!!!! aaaaaaaaahhhhw!! I screamed.

You shot my brain!! I blurted.

I couldn't believe how painful it was, my ear was burning.. I had to see

it, if for no other reason, to convince myself that it was worth the

trouble. And alas! It was. There in the middle of my ear stood a

shinning piece of gold, my treasure.

I smiled, the pain faded.

Multichain necklaces

Be prepared to get fabulous.....

I love this necklace. I know what you are thinking, its gorgeous but how do i get it??

i haven't had a chance to go out looking for stores that stock these  (and i promise you I will pretty soon,) however, I can let you in on a secret, very simple indeed.. if you look closely you will see that you can actually make your own piece. Simply buy as many red beaded necklaces as you can, (this will set you off anywhere between 20 to 100 ksh per piece) collect links from the old necklaces you have and link all your necklaces up!! simple, innit?!

you can even make it multicoloured...

or in this season's hottest colour...

more necklaces i liked..

So what do you think, do you already own a multichain neklace?? If not are you gonna indulge??

let me know your thoughts..
